Violet base cancels out yellow, blue base cancels orange and green cancels red. You need an ash color, if you pick the right tone of hair color, eg light ash brown, it would be a violet or blue base, darker colors will have a stronger green base.

my wife is a hairdresser and she says.... " No problem. Do your all over colour first. Get the "natural colour level" that you want and get it with an ash in it. Ash is green based, and green cools out the red. When you do your highlights leave the lightening product on a little longer, but make sure you keep checking on it. If you wash it out and it is still looking like strawberry brassyness it's okay. Get another colour ( the colour you want the highlights to be) also with the ash in it.
Your best bet is to go to a salon to get this done. That way you'll get what you are looking for. Look at the colour book swatches and don't be afraid to hold them up onto your hair. Getting it done at a hairsalon you'll get the closest colour to your natural colour and they have the ashes you'll need to rid yourself of the red. I know it can get a little costly but they'll be able to do the highlighting alot easier. If they don't rid of the red as well as you would like on the first try tell them, it's their job to make sure you are happy and satisfied ....it's nice to get pampered once in a while so go get it done. Good luck.
