the pipes were also replaced,did they do something wrong?

archer is right. if you need to replace your water softener, this is the BEST IN ALL THE LAND! i am a retired water chemist.

red is rust from Iron in your water.



Make sure that the water softener has not been bypassed during the installation... not sure why they would do that but it is possible.



Also, you made need your softener looked at anyways.

Have the well checked out, the bottom may have caved in and, or the well may have been disturbed after a lot of years and the rust from the well pipe was loosened.

I would say something from the bottom of your well was sucked up into your water softener and damaged it. But make sure your bypass valve was not engaged by accident too. There is also supposed to be a screen on the bottom of your well point, that may have been damaged or broken off allowing large incursions of unwanted objects.
