Do I have to bleach my hair if I want to dye it red?

If you're doing an all-over color, you can only go a deeper red without lightening it first. If you're only putting red in streaks, a red lighter than the darkest shade of your hair will only color the lighter pieces. If you want any red color that won't fade into a ruddy red or pinkish tone, you'll have to get a professional hair color (meaning, nothing that can be bought over-the-counter or at Sally Beauty Supply) which won't fade to a pink or ugly red because it's made to fade out differently--depending on the product used.

Red pigment is a larger compound than other hair colors and therefore is harder to keep in the hair for a long period of time. (meaning, all reds will wash out, you just have to use the best quality reds that will last longest, or that are made to fade out to your natural color and not leave behind the stain that makes the hair look pink.)

If you're coloring only your highlighted pieces, you can use any red color you want, but you'll need to be using color-care products to help keep the red pigment in your hair the longest, but it generally will leave the hair stained a reddish/pinkish tone when it comes out. If you're coloring the brown hair, you'll have to use a red that is darker than the hair you're coloring, or you won't be able to see it. You can only make dark brown hair a lighter color, by bleaching it unless you use a permenant color on hair that has never been colored before. (If your hair is colored brown, you can't make it lighter without bleach, but if it's naturally that darker color, putting a lighter color on it might work--but it won't be the same color the box shows.)

If at all possible, you should get on ebay and buy Redken Shades EQ which is a temporary color that will fade out to your natural color (unless you use a super-dark color which will generally stain your hair and not be so easy to come out.) The Shades EQ color will fade out to your natural color over the course of a few months, but it doesn't stain the hair like many colors do. However, the temporary color will not make the hair lighter. Temporary colors are non-abrasive and don't have the chemicals that can lighten the natural hair like permenant colors do. Redken Color Gels is the same line, but permenant, which also does not stain the hair like most all of your box colors, or over-the-counter colors will. I say buy these products on ebay because they are only available to professionals, so unless you know a licensed cosmetologist/esthetician/nail-tech, you won't be able to purchase them generally. Ebay does sell these products to the highest bidder, however. Also, make sure you buy the developer that goes with the color line you choose. (Shades EQ developer for shades, or Color Gels 20v to add a medium red to your natural brown hair, or Color Gels 30-40v if you want a light red--again, this only works if the dark hair you're coloring has not been colored at all (excluding highlights). Good Luck!

P.S.-This advice is only if you're not willing to have a professional stylist do it, which I highly recommend, but I understand that some people can't afford to do so, but want a good hair color that will last. I wish you the best!

You can only forgo bleaching if you use the right color. Only professional colors will lift your hair enough if it's dark to show a beautiful red. My favorite is Redken Double Fusion reds. It's made for dark hair, and it lifts and colors at the same time. You can go to Sallys and ask for something similar, it's usually considered a high-lift color...I just can't remember the brand name?
