The best way to keep your reds vibrant is to use a sulfate-free shampoo, and a color depositing conditioner such as Aveda Bixa or Annato conditioner. (unfortunatly Aveda doesn't make a sulfate-free shampoo however, the best sulfate-free shampoo I've found is Pureology) Also if you go out into the sun (even if it's winter) you should wear a hat. just get a hair shampoo and conditioner for your chemical treated hair and of course get a hair treatment every once or twice a month from the salon. You also can get a hair mask to do it at home for once or twice a week.

The best bet is to get a shampoo and conditioner specifically made for color treated hair. I use one made by Suave that I have had very good luck with. And, its much less expensive than the designer brands. (I used to use Herbal Essences b/c I thought it would be mild, and a hairdresser told me that that brand could actually strip the color from your hair.)

Also, you want to avoid any bleaching chemicals or acidic products if you can. If you do a lot of swimming, be sure to rinse your hair well afterwards or wear a swim cap. Chlorine can not only make the color fade, it can actually alter the color to something much less attractive.

Other than that, just keep up with the root touch ups. Its much easier than doing the whole thing all over again.

The first time you wash your hair, so much color is going to go down the drain, but don't worry, just wait a whole day or two before you wash it after coloring and use a good color shampoo and conditioner, like John Frieda's red shampoo. I dyed mine burgundy/purple once, but now i'm blonde again and i'll never go back!

If it's a semi permanent dye (Manic panic, special effects, etc.) then take a tablespoon of the dye and put it in your conditioner then shake it to mix it. When you wash your hair then conditioner(with the color mixed in)will put some color back into your hair which will lengthen the life of your dye job.
