Can you put a chocolate brown hair dye over a reddy brown and elimate the red?

At the moment my hair is a medium brown which shines red in the light. I want my hair to be deep chocolate brown with NO red. Im going to the hairdresser this week and dont know wether ill need them to strip my hair or wether they can dye straight over the colour with chocolate brown and it wont have any red in it. Thanks

You don't need to strip your hair since you want to keep it brown. You can have them put brown over it, but eventually it will start to look red again. An ash brown will cover it more than chocolate, which already has more red in it.

Yes it should cover it up but it will slowly begin to show again through wash N wear. Also when adding colour to existing colour, it will go darker.

Well all browns have some kind of red tint of them in the light so you cannot get rid of the red.

To achieve the deep color of chocolate, you are going to have to try and eliminate some of the red. If your hair has a true red base, then I would suggest using a nuetral brown with an ash base. This should get you closer to a nuetral color. Then, glaze the hair with a demi-permanent color in a deep chocolate. These colors have a more caramel or copper base,so you will have to eliminate the red first. You DO NOT need to strip your color, not if you are a level of at least a 7 or so. DO NOT do that. Stripping color is only for removal of very dark colors that cannot be corrected with a tonal change, and stripping creates its own issues. Plan on spending time and money. Be patient and expect to have more than one service and more than one day to achieve your desired color. Color is an art and a science. So if you really want something different, understand it is a process.
