Why is it when I dye my hair brown or blonde it goes red/orange?

My hair is fine and naturally dark brown. My skin tone is kind of darker too. Every few months I have been bleaching it then dying it darker to cover up the bleach. The result it it always goes this orangey red. Even at the salon...100 dollars for orangey red. Which looks so bad since my eyebrows are black. So I bought a medium-dark ash brown shade and just dyed my hair. And the roots are reddish. The rest is ok just the roots are reddish. I do not want to dye my hair again, is there any reason why its doing this and is there a way i can make the roots darker without dying them?

It's probably from the bleach, or from too many chemicals.

well my perspective is.....u should change ur hair color.....whats the point.......why not let it hang naturally....take care of YOURSELF

Hair has stages. black, brown, red, strawberry, blonde, white. You have to time it correctly. Do a strand test first. It should say on the box how to do this. Time it then only do your hair that length of time. Trust me. I have dyed my hair over 200 times and it hasn't fallen out yet.

well i learned the hard way too, you have to use ash tones in your dye if your naturally brown, always look for the ash colors,(i died myhair bright bright orange) if you dont use them they will alwayse bring out the aburne we have only worse

The reason it's turning orangey-red is because the color is being stripped away. Initially the dye darkens your hair but as it washes away (which even permanent color does), the red tones come out. When you bleach your hair, you remove all the color so that's why is stays brown then - but your roots are reddish because the color has not been stripped (the hair has never been bleached or dyed). I would just dye the roots and then before rinsing the dye (maybe 10-15 minutes before), spread the color over the rest of your head for a refresher.

Lifting past the red stages in dark hair is a pain.

Maybe there's iron in the water, that can make your hair red

because the more you wash your hair the color that you dyed it is going to become more and more lighter

It is very common for dark brown and black hair to turn orange when yout lighten it. If you had problems even at the salon, it sounds like your colorist does not know what they are doing of is using the wrong product. There is special high lift lighteners made specifcally for darker hair that you can get at a beauty supply store. I believes the high lift hair colors are made by L'oreal. Developer comes in several strengths, but again you would have to hit the beauty supply store. I think it is a godd idea that you do not dye it again, I fired my hair pretty bad about 5 years ago lightening it too much. If you want to make you roots darker again, they make OTC root touch up kits. That would probably look most natural. Some places have this thing that looks like lipstick almost, except you put it in your hair to cover your roots. I've never used it, so I can't say how well it works.
