What can I do to dye my hair without having my roots turn red/orange from the dye?

I have naturally light to medium brown hair and I have been dying it darker for awhile. I notice that when I use the box from the store and even when I go to salon sometimes that my hair (the roots) will turn red/orange. I use an ash colored dye: medium ash brown. I don't want to pay to go to a salon so do you know of a product (even if i have to go to a beauty salon retail store) that can fix my hair.

I buy my haircare products at Sallys Beauty Supply. They have an additive that you can to your hair color mixture when you are coloring your hair to stop the red.It is called Red Out. I am sure they would have this in other beauty supply stores if you have one in your town.You also would be doing better to use a professional color sense you will be getting this to color your hair.
